Penang's vibrant festivals are a colorful reflection of the State's multiculturalism. There are bountiful events waiting to be experienced, from traditional festivals, street parades, cultural shows, walkabout heritage tours to fun weekend markets and much more.
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. One of Penang's biggest festivals, the celebration goes on for 15 days straight, offering many auspicious cultural dances, colorful lion and dragon dances, festive cuisine and cookies and the giving of 'red packets' to young ones who are single.
Thaipusam
Thaipusam is a temple festival celebrated by Hindus of Tamil descent. It is the largest and most significant Hindu public display in Malaysia, and is a celebration all about faith, endurance and penance. Walk with the Hindu devotees in the procession and give offerings to show appreciation to Lord Murugan and receive blessings.
